Visas for World Youth Day, Sydney 2008

Who is this visa for?

World Youth Day (WYD) will be hosted in Sydney from 15-20 July 2008.

You will need to apply for a Tourist visa (Subclass 676) in order to attend World Youth Day. As a registered pilgrim you will be entitled to apply for your visa free of Australian Government visa application charges by following the process detailed below.

How to apply

1. ETA passport holders

If you hold an ETA-eligible passport you will be eligible to travel to World Youth Day on this electronic visa (see: http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ to check if you are eligible).

All you need to do is register online to attend World Youth Day (see: www.wyd2008.org) and your ETA application will be sent automatically to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Australia. You will then be notified by email of the outcome of your application.

2. Other EU citizens

If you are not eligible for an ETA but are a citizen of a European Union country, you are eligible to submit an online Tourist visa (subclass e676) application at any time free of government charges. To apply online, please visit http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/visitors.htm

3. Paper application

If you are unable to apply for your visa online, to make a paper visa application, please follow the steps below.

For residents of France, Andorra, Belgium and Luxembourg; World Youth Day paper applications are processed at the Australian Embassy Berlin. For details on how to lodge your World Youth Day application, please see the Australian Embassy Berlin website.

NOTE: TO ASSIST IN EFFICIENT PROCESSING OF APPLICATIONS FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY, PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION BEFORE 1 NOVEMBER 2007 OR AFTER 1 JUNE 2008.

1. Register online to attend World Youth Day. See: http://www.wyd2008.org

2. Print a copy of the application form 48R – see http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/48r.pdf. Complete all questions and sign it. (This form is available in several languages; see: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/application-forms/languages/languages_num.htm.)

3. If you are under 18 years of age: Print out a copy of the parental consent form 1229 – see: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1229.pdf, and ask your parents or guardians to complete it. You will also need to submit evidence of your relationship with your parent/ guardian (for example, a copy of your full birth certificate showing the names of both parents) and a copy of identification for your parent/ guardian showing their signature (for example, a passport).

4. The following supporting documentation will need to be provided with your application:

• Your passport with instruction on how you would like it to be returned to you (for example, prepaid courier or self-addressed envelope)

• 2 passport sized photographs (no more than 6 months old)

• Evidence that you will be able to support yourself while in Australia. This could include, any fundraising you have undertaken, bank statements for at least three months prior to the application, or evidence of financial support from a sponsoring organisation or family member/ relative.

• Evidence of current and ongoing educational enrolment and/or employment in your current country of residence.

• Evidence of residence status if you are not a national of the country you applying from

5. Print a copy of the World Youth Day coversheet, which you obtained when registering on the World Youth Day website, and complete it.

6. Lodge your application with supporting documents. Applications may be lodged by mail/courier or in person at the Australian Embassy in Berlin. See: Australian Embassy in Berlin website.
