TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN AUSTRALIA
Class : Educational (Temporary)
Subclass : 442 Stagiaire (Occupational Trainee)
Purpose of Visa
This visa provides for the temporary entry to Australia of persons who will undertake a supervised training program (paid or unpaid) that is work-place-based rather than class-room-based and is designed specifically to increase their skill level in their occupation or area of expertise.
Who is eligible?
You may be eligible for this visa if;
* the occupational training that is proposed will give you additional or enhanced skills that you will be able to utilise in your occupation after leaving Australia;
* the occupational opportunities available to Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia will not be adversely affected;
you are sponsored by businesses or other organisations in France for training with an Australian organisation;
* you are already qualified in France and you organise for yourself a program to upgrade your skills;
* you want practical experience in Australia as part of your study in France;
* you are recruited by an Australian business planning expansion overseas and you want to study the organisation’s activities in Australia;
* you are a medical graduate and you want to undertake postgraduate training at a teaching hospital for more than 3 months (for less than 3 months, you should apply for a sub-class 456 Temporary Business Entry visa);
* you want to undertake religious training;
* you are a World Health Organisation Fellow undertaking practical training with HFS;
* you have been selected by UN organisations for training with Australian institutions (eg FAO nominees completing training within CSIRO or within industry);
you are military personnel undertaking a course of training administered by the Department of Defence.
What must my employer do?
Your employer in Australia must nominate you by lodging a Form 913 Occupational Trainee Nomination at the nearest office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) in Australia, regardless of the length of stay or whether the training is paid or unpaid. Your employer should send you a copy of the Nomination approval letter. The processing time for the Nomination by the Immigration office in Australia is approximately 2 months.
What do I need to provide?
To apply for an Occupational Trainee visa, you should send by mail or lodge at the Immigration Office the following documents:
* Form 147
* Non-reimbursable processing fee payable by cheque to the order of the Australian Embassy; (please refer to attached Charges list)
* Copy of the DIAC nomination approval letter sent to your employer
* 1 passport sized photo for you and each family member included in your application;
* Evidence that you have taken out adequate health insurance to cover the period of your intended stay in Australia. Your contract should indicate the level of coverage, as well as the dates of validity.
* Valid passport for you and each family member included in your application;
IF YOU ARE RESIDENT IN FRANCE - Please enclose a self-addressed envelope with €3.36 (1 passport), €3.80 (2 passports), €4.61 (3-5 passports) postage stamps, together with a completed form 'Preuve de depot SANS avis de réception' obtained from the post office.
IF YOU ARE RESIDENT OUTSIDE FRANCE - Please enclose a self-addressed envelope with 7 International Response Coupons, purchased at the post office, to cover postal costs.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD ONLY LODGE YOUR APPLICATION WHEN YOU HAVE RECEIVED A COPY OF THE NOMINATION APPROVAL LETTER FROM YOUR EMPLOYER. A FACSIMILE COPY IS ACCEPTABLE. WE ARE UNABLE TO PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION UNTIL WE RECEIVE CONFIRMATION THAT THE FORM 913 OCCUPATIONAL TRAINEE NOMINATION HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP (DIAC) IN AUSTRALIA.
Do I need health checks?
Generally, a medical visit and radiological examination is only required for a stay of more than 12 months. However, health checks may be required for a shorter stay. The Immigration Section will advise you of health processing requirements when you lodge your application.
How long can I stay?
Up to 2 years or the length of your nomination, whichever is the shorter.
What about health insurance?
You will not be covered by Medicare (Australia' s health care system). You will need to hold private medical insurance.
